NNSA highlights research by CREDDS member, George Pharr
The December 2021 issue of “Stewardship Science Today,” published by the NNSA’s Office of Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E), highlighted research by CREDDS member, George Pharr. The work, published in PNAS, reports a surprisingly low dislocation density underneath nanoindents in metals—a finding that challenges prevailing theories of nanoscale plasticity.
CREDDS-sponsored undergraduate summer researchers win outstanding presentation awards
Two undergraduate summer researchers supported by CREDDS won outstanding presentation awards from the 2021 online REU (O-REU) program at Texas A&M University. Robert Kaman (Iowa State U., pictured below left) worked under the guidance of Brady Butler on a project titled “Quantification of Thermo-Hydrogen Refined Microstructural (THRM) features in Additively Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V.” Lauren Ward (Michigan State U., picture below right) worked with Michael Demkowicz on a project titled “Modeling the evolution of interpolating microstructures in nano-layered metal composites.”
CREDDS co-hosts mixer for NNSA-sponsored projects at Texas A&M University
On July 6, 2021, CREDDS and the Texas A&M University (TAMU) National Laboratories Office (NLO) co-sponsored a mixer for participants in NNSA-sponsored projects at TAMU. All CREDDS-sponsored undergraduate summer researchers at TAMU were also invited to participate. In addition to face-to-face networking, the meeting featured brief presentations by CREDDS director Michael Demkowicz, CENTAUR director Sherry Yennello, and Center for Nuclear Security Science and Policy Initiatives director Sunil Chirayath (pictured below).
CREDDS sponsors summer internships for 26 undergraduate students
CREDDS supported summer internships for 26 undergraduate students in 2021. Two of them carried out on-site internships at TAMU through the Undergraduate Summer Research Grant (USRG) program: Ryan Gordon (U. of Connecticut) and Vivian Spencer (Cornell U.). Twenty two took part in the online REU (O-REU) program at TAMU: Kassandra Avila (Texas Christian U.), Nina Castaneda (U. of Texas at Austin), Brittany DeNicholas (California Polytechnic State U.), Raphael Francisco (Georgia Tech.), Jaime Guerra (U. of Texas Rio Grande Valley), Reid Harrison (TAMU), Andres Hassun (U. of Texas at Austin), Robert Kaman (Iowa State U.), Karen Kline (U. of New Mexico), Ruben Lopez (U. of Houston, Clear Lake), Olivia McNally (U. of Arizona), Nathan Miller (Brigham Young U.), Justin Oca (U. of Texas at Austin), Isabel Parra (St. Mary’s U.), Aniket Patel (TAMU), Osvaldo Quintero (TAMU), Angel Randall (Texas A&M Prairie View), Ramon Sanchez (U. of Texas, Rio Grande Valley), Wendy Storms (TAMU), Andres Valdiviezo (U. of Texas at Austin), Lauren Ward (Michigan State U.), and Kalanie Wilson (Georgia Tech.). Two U. of Michigan students carried out on-site internships at U. of Michigan: Michael Stryk and Jeffrey Tschirhart.
